The article discusses the features of psychological selection in the system of reserve training in
water sports. The psychological characteristics of athletes that affect the success of sports activities and
which must be taken into account during selection are revealed. Methods aimed at determining such
psychological characteristics as the type of temperament, the type of nervous system and the level of
autonomic arousal are also described. A study aimed at identifying the psychological characteristics
of athletes engaged in swimming and artistic swimming, allowed to determine the prevailing type of
temperament in athletes, identify the type of nervous system and measure the level of autonomic
arousal. This study indicates the need for psychological selection in the formation of a sports reserve not
only in water sports, but also in other sports.
